Alika Cotons, since 1974

There are two very different breeds of dogs currently sold in the United States as "Cotons de Tulear."

There's the rare, ORIGINAL Malagasy Coton de Tulear breed which was developed over Centuries on the Island of Madagascar as a small, intelligent, engaging, powerful, muscular, laid-back companion class dog. That breed, the Malagasy Royal Coton de Tulear, comes in three color varieties and is only to be found through Coton de Tulear Club of America Code of Ethics Breeders. Alika Cotons has been breeding and protecting Malagasy Cotons longer than anyone else in the world -- 34 years this year!

Then there is the "Euro" or "French" Coton, a breed whose modern creators strive to make into a tiny, all white Toy dog almost exactly like a Maltese. In fact these French Cotons have been mixed with Maltese and Bichon Frise, bred by the tens of thousands and imported to North America en masse beginning in the mid-1990s. So if you're looking for one of them -- a delicate, high-strung, yappy, all white fru-fru dog -- you're in the wrong place here!

I apologize for being so slow to get up site information, but we've been very busy with the Coton de Tulear Club of America (www.CotonClub.org) business, especially the CotonClub e-ZINE during the current pet food and chew toy disasters. More pictures of both litters going to their forever homes will appear soon.
